Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports
PBIS.jpgPositive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is the District 65-adopted approach to behavior intervention and supports that help children achieve important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behaviors and improving school climate.
In 2008-10, Oakton School was one of 64 schools in Illinois recognized by the Illinois PBIS network for outstanding implementation efforts.

Be Here/Ready
Be Respectful
Be Safe

"PBIS organizes adults and students to create a social culture in the school that will encourage positive behavior and interactions while discouraging problem behaviors. This social-culture will lead to a safe environment where students achieve academically and build positive relationships with each other and with adults." (From: Positive Behavioral Interventions Supports in District 65  by Andy Friedman)

Oakton received a state award, Illinois Spotlight School, for its implementation of PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, a program that encourages appropriage classroom behavior and attitudes. At Oakton, students who show respect, discipline, and leadership in the classroom, lunchroom, and on the playground are rewarded with "Cougar Paws" that help reinforce positive behavior.

Student-of-the-month assemblies honor those students who consistently follow the PBIS goals of "Be Here, Be Ready, Be Respectful, and Be Safe."  Students are chosen by their teachers. Parents and caregivers are notified and invited to the assembly.
